Contemporary Courtyard Garden – Surrey Hills

Set in the heart of the Surrey Hills, this contemporary courtyard garden was designed to maximise a compact space while creating a seamless connection between the home and garden.

Large patio doors from the kitchen diner open onto flush limestone paving, creating a true inside–out living space where the courtyard becomes a natural extension of the interior. Clean lines, carefully chosen materials and thoughtful detailing give the space a calm, modern feel while making it highly practical for everyday living and entertaining.

Despite its limited footprint, the garden incorporates several distinct features. A sauna and outdoor shower area are cleverly integrated into the design, while built-in seating creates a comfortable social area without crowding the space.

The material palette plays an important role in bringing the design together. Limestone paving with subtle paver detailing adds visual interest, complemented by metal planters and warm cedar cladding that soften the architectural lines and add contrast in texture.

Planting focuses on exotic, textured species that thrive in a sheltered courtyard environment, creating a lush backdrop that brings movement and softness to the contemporary layout.

As evening falls, carefully placed lighting highlights the structure, planting and materials, transforming the courtyard into an inviting outdoor space that can be enjoyed day and night.
